Put down the tiny glowing rectangle
Attention is easier to trust when it is visible. Put your phone down, turn towards your partner and choose a moment when you can actually listen. If you cannot give the conversation your attention now, suggest a specific time and keep it.
You do not need a perfect speech. Start with “Tell me what happened.” Let the answer finish. A pause is not a technical fault that you must fix with your own anecdote.
YOUR PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENTHave a five-minute conversation with your phone out of reach.
